Task 5 - Genre findings

 - The goal of the horror genre in science fiction is to inflict on the audience strong emotions of terror, dread, and shock. It uses people's basic fears and concerns to evoke intense emotional responses. Horror stories frequently have paranormal aspects, monsters, ghosts, or psychotic human adversaries, but they can also have a psychological and realistic underpinning. Horror frequently addresses themes like mortality, the unknown, the afterlife, and the darkest sides of human nature. The atmosphere, tension, and suspense are essential components in the genre.

Relevant Social Issues:

Surveillance and Privacy

In an era where surveillance cameras, smartphones, and drones are ubiquitous, found footage films can amplify contemporary anxieties around privacy, surveillance, and the feeling of being constantly watched or monitored. These films often question the boundaries of privacy and the implications of living in a surveillance society.

Media Manipulation and Misinformation

The authenticity of media and the potential for manipulation is a critical theme in found footage films. By presenting fictional events as real, these films underscore the ease with which media can be manipulated and highlight the growing skepticism towards the information presented by authorities and media outlets. This mirrors broader societal concerns about fake news, deepfakes, and the reliability of information sources.

Social Isolation and Alienation

The intimate, personal perspectives often portrayed in found footage films can also touch on themes of isolation, alienation, and the human need for connection. In a world increasingly mediated by screens, these films can underscore the paradox of being constantly connected yet profoundly alone.

Mental Health

Found footage films often delve into the psychological impact of fear, trauma, and the supernatural on individuals. They can provide a visceral portrayal of mental health struggles, exploring the thin line between reality and psychosis, and how quickly societal norms can collapse under extreme stress.
